Our pre-college programs provide high school students with a taste of collegiate life.
During her senior year at in Holden, Massachusetts, Nicole Baker searched for a summer dance program that would help propel her to collegiate success. 鈥�Adelphi was one of the first names that came up,鈥� she said, referring to the University鈥檚 highly reputable summer pre-college programs.
It was the perfect fit.
In the summer of 2012, Nicole took advantage of all the program had to offer, including the world-renowned faculty and the state-of-the-art . It honed her skills and helped to influence her school choice.
鈥淸The program] really prepped me for college, and it was the reason I came to Adelphi,鈥� said Nicole, now a freshman. 鈥淚t gave me a professional outlook on dance rather than the studio atmosphere.鈥�
Nicole is just one of many high school students to benefit from Adelphi鈥檚 . Each summer, the University offers intensives in a range of subject areas that include both commuter and residential opportunities.
鈥淎delphi鈥檚 pre-college programs offer high school students the opportunity to experience what college life is like,鈥� Coordinator of High School Programs Erin Raia said.听鈥淚t challenges them to think and听discover something new about themselves while making new friends.
鈥淭he residential component allows students to really get a feel for college.听They meet other students from around the country听and make听lasting friendships.鈥�
That taste of life and academics at Adelphi was all Eileen Balzac needed. As a senior at , she was undecided about whether to pursue a career in elementary education or nursing. She got an introduction to the profession through the nursing intensive in 2012, where she studied in the classroom and at Adelphi鈥檚 , which includes mock hospital settings and a simulation manikin.
鈥淭he majority of the intensive was in the classroom,鈥� Eileen said. 鈥淏ut there was a day when we visited a hospital and they took us through different departments. At Adelphi, they have the Sim labs, where we took blood.
鈥淚t鈥檚 a great experience if anyone is interested in nursing. It鈥檚 a great thing to discover what you want to do.鈥�
