Why Earn an Advanced Certificate in Middle School Education?
An advanced certificate in middle school education allows childhood and secondary education graduates to extend their areas and marketability. You’ll examine the many dimensions of the young adolescent experience, including gender and sexuality, intellectual, emotional and ethical growth, and political and social development while gaining a deeper understanding of the instructional needs of the students within the middle school environment.

- Complete in two semesters if you are in the middle school education program
- Hybrid format with two-thirds online and one-third in person at our Garden City campus
- If you hold a NYSED teaching certificate in childhood or adolescent education, this advanced certificate can be used as continuing education.
- If you are in the master’s program in childhood education (grades 1-6), you can add this advanced certificate to deepen your understanding of specialized instructional techniques.
- If you are in the master’s program in adolescent/high school education (grades 7-12), you can add this certificate to pursue teaching in specific subject areas at the 7-9 grade levels.
Additional Requirements
For Current Students
For current Adelphi students, in addition to base certification in adolescence or childhood education, students must have 30-credits in one content area:
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Earth Science
- English
- Mathematics
- Physics
- Foreign Language
- History/Social Studies
- General Science (18 credits in two additional science areas beyond initial science specialty)
For NYSED Certified Teachers
If you are currently a teacher looking to continue your education and expand your knowledge on middle school education, you will specifically need a NYSED teaching certificate in childhood or adolescent education.
Application Requirements
Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and should submit the following:
- Online application
- Two letters of recommendation
- Personal essay
- Official transcripts from all prior institutions and proof of bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year institution
- Final transcript documenting a master’s degree from an accredited four-year institution
- Course-by-course evaluation: All graduate applicants with undergraduate-level work completed outside of the United States will be required to send a course-by-course evaluation of their academic work prepared by a NACES member organization. Adelphi recommends you use or (discount provided for Adelphi applicants), , or , but any evaluation would be acceptable.
